Surgery position

Someone told me that when they do the RNY surgery that you are strapped to a table then rotated to a verticle position for the surgery. Is that true?? I guess it might make sense seeing that your insides are resting different standing up than laying down. I'd rather be horizontal.

I have never heard of that. Did you hear it from the Dr or someone else. Best source is ask your Dr.

Someone at work said that's how they did her friend.  Sounds a little strange to me.

I've watched several videos of LapBand, Lap RNY, open RNY, etc by different doctors. All of them were performed while the patient was lying down on the operating table horizontally. It would seem strange to me that a doctor would stand a patient up to perform this surgery. I've never heard of that.

Bill, Frome the The Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons Handbook--- TECHNIQUE: 1. Positioning of the patient

The patient lies supine, thighs fully abducted and slightly bent. The operating table has a 30° reversed Trendelenburg tilt. The surgeon stands between the patient's legs, the first assistant to the patient's left and the second assistant to the right. I remember about a year ago when someone posted this-   We all asked- What sort of Azz-Work did Your Doc do?!? Usually, Folks are flat on their back. You can watch a number of Bariatric Operations online And see the Whole she-bang (Inside and out) http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-8636464984047127563 along with a great blow by blow description of what you're seeing... Best Wishes- Dx

Do you remember your A$$ hurting a little after surgery, or was that just me?

I think this may be a matter of the surgeon's preference.  I don't know if you've seen the show "Big Medicine" on TLC or not (if not, it's worth watching), but I've seen them do it both ways.  I know that I was flat on my back horizontal for mine though.

I did not know about this until the day of the surgery. Yes this is true.

You're tilted at a slight angle with your head above your fett at about a 30 degree angle.  Because the doctor has to ewrk on organs that are higher in the cavity, they tilt the bed so that the extra colon and other things rest in the lower part of your abdomen.
